How solar works · 12 March 2025

Do solar panels work in winter?

Yes. Panels run on daylight, not heat, so they keep generating on cold, bright days. Output is lower in winter, which is where a battery earns its keep.

Solar panels convert light into electricity, so they work all year round. In fact, panels are slightly more efficient when they're cold.

What changes in winter

Shorter days and a lower sun mean less energy overall. A typical Somerset system makes most of its annual output between April and September.

Making the most of it

A battery lets you charge on cheap overnight tariffs in winter, then use that energy at peak times, so it keeps saving you money when the sun is low.
